Apple just unveiled its latest iPhone lineup and a bunch of other exciting hardware at the Apple event 2024. One of the standout features of the iPhone 16 series—which includes 4 different models—is the new “capture” button that makes using the camera a breeze. But perhaps the most significant feature is Apple Intelligence, something we got a sneak peek at earlier this year.

With so many new features and upgrades, there’s plenty to explore. From the powerful A18 chip to fresh updates for AirPods and the Apple Watch, the event was packed with highlights that are definitely worth catching up on.

iPhone 16

Apple has just dropped the news about the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, along with the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus that we heard about earlier. If you’re eyeing the top-tier models, these Pro versions are where it’s at. They boast upgraded screens and cameras compared to their standard counterparts.

The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max sport bigger displays—6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively. They run on the powerful A18 Pro chip, built using a 3-nanometre process. The Pro starts at $999 for 128GB, while the Pro Max kicks off at $1,199 for 256GB. You can pre-order them starting September 13, with the official launch on September 20.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus come with 5 new colors, a customizable Action Button, and a new Camera Control button. Both models feature a 48MP main camera with pixel binning. Besides, there’s a 12MP telephoto camera with 2X zoom and an improved ultrawide camera with autofocus.

All the new iPhone 16 models are coming with a capture button that serves as a quick shortcut to the camera. This touch-sensitive button lets you control focus, zoom, and take photos with different gestures, making it super convenient to snap the perfect shot.

A18 chip

As the names imply, the A18 Pro powers the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, while the standard A18 is in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. Let’s dive into the A18 Pro first.

The A18 Pro uses a second-gen 3nm process, making it more efficient. It features the “fastest CPU in any smartphone” with 6 cores—2 high-performance and 4 energy-saving. It outperforms the A17 Pro by 15% while consuming 20% less power. Its GPU is top-notch too, with a desktop-class architecture that’s 20% faster and supports ray tracing twice as fast. Plus, it supports advanced media features like ProMotion display, Always-on display, faster USB 3 speeds, and ProRes video recording, which aren’t available on the standard iPhones. The new image processing unit also boosts camera and video encoding performance, making it twice as fast as the A17 Pro.

The A18 chip in the non-Pro models is similar but not quite as advanced. It also has a 6-core CPU that’s 30% faster and 30% more efficient than the A16 Bionic. However, it lacks the “Advanced media” features and uses a 5-core GPU instead of 6. Still, it’s impressive, with a 40% performance boost over the A16 Bionic and 35% better power efficiency. It’s up to 60% faster than the iPhone 12’s CPU and matches high-end desktops in speed. The GPU in the iPhone 16 is also up to 40% faster than in the iPhone 15.

Apple Intelligence: the showstopper of the Apple event 2024?

Apple Intelligence is adding some cool new twists to how you interact with your devices. One of the standout features is the ability to create custom emojis simply by typing in prompts. It’s a fun way to personalize your messages and add a bit of flair to your conversations.

Beyond emojis, Apple Intelligence also improves how you search through your photos, emails, and texts. You can now type in descriptions or give voice commands through Siri to find exactly what you’re looking for. This new AI functionality will be part of a free software update for US English users next month. It makes finding and organizing your digital life a lot easier.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior VP of Software Engineering, said that Apple Intelligence is not only about language and images but also about keeping your data secure. New features, including those for generating emojis and a Visual Intelligence tool for identifying objects in photos, will be rolled out over time. And with a promise that your data remains private, you can enjoy these advancements knowing your information is safe and sound.

You’ll need to wait until 2025 for the major overhaul of Siri. This year’s update will primarily focus on a refreshed interface and design. The significant improvements are slated for next year.

AirPods 4 headphones

Apple also launched a fresh version of its AirPods at the Apple event 2024. They’ve used some pretty advanced tech to study thousands of ears to make them fit better and feel more comfortable. These new AirPods come with the H2 chip for better sound quality during playback and calls. Plus, the AirPods 4 finally bring USB-C to the base model case and promise up to 30 hours of battery life.

Pre-orders for the AirPods 4 start this Monday, and they’ll begin shipping on September 20. The base model is priced at $129, while the ANC version will be $179. Along with these, Apple’s also updated the AirPods Max and added some cool new hearing health features to the AirPods Pro.

Apple Watch Series 10

The Apple Watch Series 10 is the newest addition to Apple’s smartwatch lineup, boasting a bigger screen than the Apple Watch Ultra. It’s got a 40% brighter wide-angle OLED display, which is larger than the one on the Apple Watch Ultra. Plus, it’s only 9.7 millimeters thick, making it 10% thinner and lighter than the Series 9. The new Series 10 features the biggest OLED screen ever used in an Apple Watch. This means you can see an extra line of text and easily check your emails and messages at a glance.

Apple Watch Ultra 2

Apple has just introduced a new color for the $799 Apple Watch Ultra 2, now available in a sleek satin black titanium finish. It’s the top-of-the-line model in Apple’s smartwatch range. It boasts the longest battery life of any Apple Watch.

I’m pretty excited about all the new updates and features we heard about at the Apple event 2024. The enhanced camera and improved performance are just the tip of the iceberg. With these fresh design elements and more conveniences, everything seems to be geared toward making tech more enjoyable.

At IFA 2024, they introduced the concept Auto Twist AI PC, which features a motorized hinge that follows your movements and rotates the display to always face you. It even responds to voice commands to switch between modes. This new AI PC has much in store.

A friend of mine has had a bunch of laptops over the years. And they all ended up with those annoying light scratches on the bottom from sitting on hard surfaces. Now, he’s considering switching to a 2-in-1 laptop to use as a writing tablet. He’s really into the idea but worries that placing the laptop face down on different surfaces might scratch the keyboard and trackpad. The new AI PC is designed with these concerns in mind.

Here’s where the Lenovo Auto Twist AI concept comes in. It tackles a common issue with 2-in-1 laptops —the wear and tear on the keyboard and trackpad when the laptop is in tablet mode. With most 2-in-1s, the keyboard faces the desk, which means it can get scuffed up over time.

But with the Twist AI PC, the screen flips open, twists 180 degrees, and then folds back down, so your keyboard and trackpad are always protected. When it’s in tablet mode, only the bottom of the laptop touches the surface, keeping everything else scratch-free.

3. Use cases

Lenovo designed a tracking system for the AI PC that physically moves the laptop display to follow your movements during video calls. While similar features exist, they usually rely on digital adjustments to the webcam image, not actual camera movement. Imagine being able to move around during a workout class or while giving a presentation, and the AI PC camera keeps you in frame the whole time. It’s also super handy for teachers or anyone who needs to stay mobile during virtual meetings without constantly adjusting the screen.

When C. Scott Brown from Android Authority tried it out, it worked well for a concept machine. He mentioned that if he moved really fast, it would lose him, but during normal side-to-side movements it stayed locked on him the whole time. He didn’t have enough time to test more extreme scenarios, but since it’s just a concept, that wasn’t a major concern.

Lenovo’s concept notebook weighs just 1.27 kg and comes with a 13.3-inch OLED display featuring a 2880 x 1880 resolution. It’s powered by Intel’s Core Ultra 7 processor, paired with 32 GB of RAM. Storage-wise, you get a 512 GB SSD, and the 55 Wh battery keeps things running smoothly. Plus, it breams with Windows 11 Pro.

Final thoughts on the Lenovo Auto Twist AI PC

If something like the Auto Twist AI PC hits the market, it could be super handy for anyone who struggles with manually switching their convertible laptop. In addition, having your laptop switch modes on its own would just be awesome. It might come with a hefty price tag, but I’d definitely consider getting one.

Just to be clear, this is definitely a concept device for now—no plans to mass-produce or sell it to consumers. But Lenovo has turned some of its wild concept ideas into actual products before, so there’s a slim chance it could make it to the market. Don’t get your hopes up too much, though. Between 1992 and 2017, workplace robots killed at least 41 people in the US. It’s a stark reminder that robots have had the potential to cause harm for quite some time. As artificial intelligence evolves, so does the risk.

But now, we’re seeing a shift in robotics with the NEO Beta. This new humanoid robot goes beyond the stiff, mechanical designs of the past. It adopts bio-inspired technology to safely work alongside people. NEO’s body is designed with muscle-like structures, making it both strong and gentle, just like us. This futuristic humanoid robot marks a huge step forward for 1X, as they move from the drawing board to actually bringing these advanced robots into homes.

Ensuring a robot is safe is just the first step in smooth human-robot interactions. It’s also important for people to feel safe around it, not just know it’s safe. In other words, getting people to see robots as safe is key if we want them to be accepted as partners in our everyday spaces. In a promotional video, the NEO Beta is in a living room with a young woman, helping her by handing over her backpack. The interaction ends with a gentle embrace, a rare sight in human-robot relationships. And who would have thought we’d see the day where a robot could give a hug?

Design and functionality

The NEO Beta comes in at just 66 pounds, making it significantly lighter than other robots out there. By comparison, Tesla’s Optimus GEN2 is 125.6 pounds.

In terms of movement, the NEO Beta handles it all—walking, jogging, and even climbing stairs. With a walking speed of 2.5 miles per hour and the ability to run at 7.5 miles per hour, it’s quick enough to keep up with most tasks. Plus, it can carry up to 44 pounds, making it practical for a variety of uses around the house. This kind of versatility is what you might expect from a futuristic humanoid robot.

The battery life of 2-4 hours is solid for most day-to-day activities. Whether it’s helping with simple tasks or just navigating your space, the NEO Beta seems well-equipped to handle whatever comes its way. By the way, it learns and becomes more efficient as it goes.

Will futuristic humanoid robots become affordable anytime soon?

Professor Robert Riener from ETH Zurich sees great potential in making humanoid robots more affordable. He says, “Costs will be cheap in the long run. Such robots can especially help people with disabilities, or elderly individuals who need support and want to stay independent, or those who don’t have family to help them or can’t afford care.”

Adding some perspective, Narek Vardanyan from Gadget Flow compares this to the development of autonomous cars. “It took about 6-7 years after companies started developing autonomous cars in 2017 for fully autonomous vehicles to become a reality.” This suggests that while humanoid robots may become more affordable, it could take a bit longer for them to become a common feature in households. So, the prospect of having an affordable futuristic humanoid robot might take time to fully come to fruition. I don’t expect the NEO Beta to make robotics a regular part of everyday life just yet.

Oftentimes, this means paying a subscription for software as a service. It could also include paying for licensing. But there are also some invisible costs that you’ll need to keep in mind as well; for example, does it take you several hours to train people to use this platform? If so, that’s a cost you’ll need to keep in mind.

Next, you’ll need to evaluate any new costs introduced by this technology. Some of these costs will be obvious, such as the subscription fee you pay to continue using the software. However, you’ll also need to consider more insidious costs, like extra time needed to train people.
